2026 Dubbed the Year of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a band of frogs is called an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. However, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the trend in gaming looks particularly powerful.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.

Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
