A Mountain of Anime Updates Arrived Over the Holidays
The Christmas holidays offer a plethora of pastimes considerably more enjoyable than checking the updates: unwrapping gifts, getting stuffed on delicious food, and harnessing meditation skills to not yelling at relatives. Hopefully you succeeded in enjoy all these things and more. However, the world of entertainment never sleeps, and this is notably true for the realm of anime. Numerous noteworthy announcements emerged over the holidays, and should you missed some of them, here is a roundup of the juiciest bits.
The One-Punch Man Series Season 3 Is Moving Forward (Come 2027)
Without a doubt the most shocking announcement, the notorious troubled production that was the third season of One-Punch Man wasn't enough to deter the series' continuation. The show will come back with a second cour in 2027—a date so remote they could have labeled it season 4. Even more shocking, animation studio J.C. Staff will remain leading the project. At least this time, director Shinpei Nagai is attached to direct from the outset, which might be a hopeful indicator. Yet, the promotional image for the second cour is the same image the one used for season 3, just with protagonists Saitama and Garou facing different directions. This suggests that, at this point, they must be trolling the fans.
Ruri Dragon Is Set to Be the First Shonen Jump Anime By Kyoto Animation
Kyoto Animation has forged a name for being an prestigious animation studio, making its mark not just for the superb artistry of its work but for the fair treatment of its employees—a uncommon practice in the industry. Unexpectedly, until now, it had not adapted an anime adapted from a manga published in Shonen Jump, arguably the best-known magazine in the industry. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a great choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo gained a huge following when it launched in 2022 after just a small number of issues, but then went into a two-year hiatus due to the mangaka's health issues. When it came back with a lighter schedule, the series proved it hadn't lost the fans' appreciation and goodwill, and now the community is ecstatic about the upcoming KyoAni adaptation.
The Kingdom Series Season 6 Will Get a Sequel In Production
Kingdom is the top-selling, epic Shueisha manga that is not One Piece. If you've haven't come across it before, it's because it only just received an English translation, but the anime has been airing for years, and season 6 was a further outstanding entry. It turns out that was just the first half, because a "sequel" has been revealed as in production, and it will almost certainly air in 2026.
Science Saru Will Adapt A Witch in Mongolia Into an Anime Series
A further studio known for the excellent quality of its work, Science Saru has given us critically acclaimed works of the caliber of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, more recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be taking on the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, based on the actual historical person of Fatima, an powerful woman and intellectual in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. From the trailer, the anime titled Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a highly unique and fascinating visual style, which evokes Ranking of Kings. Scheduled to launch in July 2026, this one will definitely be on my must-watch list.
Tougen Anki Will Continue With a Second Season
Right after the airing of episode 24, it was announced that Tougen Anki will be receiving a follow-up. Based on the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The upcoming season of the anime will cover the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a concrete release date has not been disclosed yet.
