From Single-Parent Vacation Hell to Pet-Sitting Bliss: One Parent's Journey

Following the marriage ended, I naively believed vacations being a single parent would be easy. Quickly discovered they were either extremely expensive, otherwise appeared only suitable for “traditional” families, or were far too budget that I returned back even more knackered than before I’d left.

Initial Holiday Experiences

My first endeavor, camping with friends, went well until the moment came to pack up our shelter. Four hours of wrestling with it under the sun later, I developed a dislike for camping. Subsequently, an adventurous trip for single-parent households. Rappelling and exploring caves were fantastic, but sleeping in a bunkbed wrecked my back. We tried a low-cost package on the island, but the crowds of nuclear families were overwhelming, and poolside chats with other ladies fizzled out since I didn’t accompanied by a handy partner for their own spouses to talk to. An excursion to Mallorca alongside a pal and her kids was brilliant, but the cost was eye-watering.

Finding Pet-Sitting

Later, the previous fall, a friend inquired if we could look after her pets within the county while she went to a ceremony. During a peaceful couple of days, we walked on the beach, and settled by the fire in the evening. That led to pet-sitting for her friend in Dorset, and it also went smoothly. Encouraged, I subscribed with an yearly £99 membership to register on a house-sitting platform, where, in exchange for caring for individuals' animals, you reside in their homes without cost. Within a few days, I’d arranged a ten-day house-sit in Sussex, looking after a retriever named Buzz while his owners traveled overseas.

Our daily strolls provided the opportunity to explore breathtaking natural settings.

It was our first sit for unknown individuals, but all anxiety vanished as soon as we reached the gorgeous spacious house and met the calm Buzz, who lived for belly scratches. Each day's canine strolls gave us the opportunity to venture into stunning nature spots, and, once we came home, we were able to unwind in the garden for important conversations about our preferred “Ghosts” personas in the BBC sitcom. There were any expensive tourist traps to wander around – instead, we browsed bookstores, treated ourselves to nail care, and went on kayak trips. I felt more carefree and more joyful than I had for a long time, and could feel the connection alongside my child Polly strengthen every day. I’m not afraid to say that I wept with happiness. Things felt achievable once more.

Could Pet-Sitting Right for You?

House-sitting isn’t for everyone. Certain individuals want zero duties on holiday other than choosing their next cocktail, are not fond of dogs or cats, or feel odd about sleeping in a stranger’s bedroom, emptying the dishwasher, and taking out the trash. But the gentle rhythm of everyday living, with employment stripped out and fresh locations to investigate, suits me perfectly.

It keeps myself from descending into complete inactivity, a state that makes me experience restless and strangely hollow. And, financially, house-sitting is a lifeline for a solo mother. Ten days break in a similar-sized house within the identical region we stayed could cost me back approximately ÂŁ2,500 via rental platforms.

A New Perspective

As for residing in a another person’s house, I found it enriching. Even though pet-sitting represents a exchange, it’s also an expression of trust among unfamiliar people and animals, which has brought out the finest version of me – my patient, loving and measured side, full of gratitude for the people and places we encounter. I’ve already lined up another short break off, caring for a sighthound in leafy Surrey, and, next year, I’d like to attempt pet-sitting abroad. Due to a touch of creative thinking, we are able to see the globe from the coziness of home – it simply turns out to be someone else’s.
