Three police officers were killed and at least 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the property in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female got detained at the site and one more individual who ran away following the explosion was apprehended not long after. All three have been taken to the hospital.

The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area displayed the property turned into a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Negotiators had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the police came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member caused the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno told reporters.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

He thought the blast had taken place on a level above the access point and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the performance of their duties.
