Major Online Disruption Affects Dozens Websites and Mobile Apps

An extensive web failure has affected dozens websites and mobile apps worldwide, as users noting issues connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s web hosting service.

The disrupted apps encompass Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-managed services including its primary shopping site and the Ring doorbell home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted along with its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, with also reports of problems using the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring device owners used networks to state their security devices were not working.

In the UK alone, reports of disruptions on individual applications reached the thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the issue began in the Atlantic coast of the US at Amazon Web Services, a section that supplies vital web infrastructure for many firms, who lease capacity on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting system.

Soon after midnight (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “increased problem frequencies and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The cascading impact appeared to hit apps globally, with the Downdetector site indicating issues with the identical platforms in multiple continents.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on online failures, additionally noted a rise in problems on that morning, and numerous instances located in the Virginia area, the region of the eastern US data center where AWS said the problems began.
