UK Expands Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert Roster with 11 Countries
British authorities has placed an additional eleven further countries to its travel advisory list concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from adulterated beverages.
The revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.
Only a few weeks ago, officials had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, after several notable incidents such as the tragic loss of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?
Methanol is a poisonous chemical typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for human consumption.
Although it is inherently formed during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the refining procedure.
However in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is impossible to identify.
Official Guidance for Tourists
Government minister a senior official said that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of industrial alcohol poisoning.
"If you're drinking spirits abroad, choose reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister said.
"If something seems unusual, like a hangover that's much more severe than normal or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor fast."
The full roster of destinations listed as posing a risk of toxic alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
