Venturing into this World's Most Haunted Grove: Gnarled Trees, UFOs and Eerie Tales in Transylvania.

"People refer to this location an enigmatic zone of Transylvania," remarks an experienced guide, his exhalation forming clouds of condensation in the chilly night air. "Numerous individuals have vanished here, many believe there's a gateway to a different realm." Marius is leading a visitor on a night walk through what is often described as the world's most haunted forest: Hoia-Baciu, an area covering one square mile of primeval local woods on the outskirts of the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

Hundreds of Years of Enigma

Stories of strange happenings here go back centuries – the grove is titled for a local shepherd who is reportedly went missing in the far-off times, along with 200 of his sheep. But Hoia-Baciu gained global recognition in 1968, when a military technician known as Emil Barnea took a picture of what he reported as a unidentified flying object suspended above a round opening in the middle of the forest.

Numerous entered this place and never came out. But don't worry," he adds, turning to his guest with a smirk. "Our guided walks have a 100% return rate."

In the time after, Hoia-Baciu has brought in yoga practitioners, traditional medicine people, ufologists and paranormal investigators from across the world, curious to experience the mysterious powers said to echo through the forest.

Contemporary Dangers

Despite being a top global destinations for lovers of the paranormal, the grove is under threat. The western suburbs of Cluj-Napoca – a modern tech hub of more than 400,000 people, called the Silicon Valley of eastern Europe – are expanding, and developers are pushing for permission to remove the forest to construct residential buildings.

Aside from a small area containing locally rare specific tree species, the forest is not officially protected, but the guide believes that the organization he was instrumental in creating – a local conservation effort – will contribute to improving the situation, motivating the government officials to acknowledge the forest's value as a tourist attraction.

Chilling Events

When small sticks and autumn leaves break and crackle beneath their boots, Marius tells numerous local legends and alleged ghostly incidents here.

  • One famous story recounts a young child vanishing during a group gathering, only to reappear after five years with no memory of what had happened, showing no signs of aging a moment, her garments lacking the slightest speck of dirt.
  • More common reports detail mobile phones and camera equipment mysteriously turning off on venturing inside.
  • Reactions range from full-blown dread to feelings of joy.
  • Some people state seeing unusual marks on their bodies, perceiving ghostly voices through the forest, or experience palms pushing them, despite being certain nobody is nearby.

Scientific Investigations

Although numerous of the stories may be impossible to confirm, there are many things before my eyes that is certainly unusual. Everywhere you look are vegetation whose trunks are bent and twisted into unusual forms.

Multiple explanations have been given to account for the misshapen plants: powerful storms could have shaped the young trees, or inherently elevated radiation levels in the ground cause their strange formation.

But formal examinations have turned up inconclusive results.

The Notorious Meadow

Marius's walks enable visitors to take part in a little scientific inquiry of their own. As we approach the clearing in the forest where Barnea captured his famous UFO pictures, he passes his guest an electromagnetic field detector which detects electromagnetic fields.

"We're entering the most active area of the forest," he says. "Try to detect something."

The vegetation suddenly stop dead as they step into a flawless round. The single plant life is the low vegetation beneath their shoes; it's clear that it's naturally occurring, and appears that this strange clearing is wild, not the result of human hands.

Between Reality and Imagination

The broader region is a place which fuels fantasy, where the border is blurred between truth and myth. In traditional settlements faith continues in strigoi ("screamers") – supernatural, shapeshifting creatures, who emerge from tombs to haunt nearby villages.

Bram Stoker's renowned vampire Count Dracula is forever associated with Transylvania, and the legendary fortress – an ancient structure situated on a stone formation in the Carpathian Mountains – is heavily promoted as "the count's residence".

But including folklore-rich Transylvania – actually, "the place beyond the forest" – seems tangible and comprehensible versus the haunted grove, which give the impression of being, for causes related to radiation, climatic or entirely legendary, a nexus for human imaginative power.

"In Hoia-Baciu," Marius says, "the line between truth and fantasy is extremely fine."
